Toronto Island Marina
Toronto Island Marina is located on the west side of Centre Island. The existing shoreline includes vertical steel walls that display signs of corrosion and deterioration. This focus area also includes the section of shoreline that travels from the marina to the ferry terminal.
What we heard
A range of alternative concept designs were presented for this focus area, including land and road raising, a steel sheet pile wall with inland or shoreline flood berms, or a steel sheet pile dock wall with a shoreline flood berm. Following the first round of public engagement and additional site review, it was determined that a new concept was required to better meet site conditions and operational needs.
This new concept is a hybrid approach that combines various elements from the initial set of solutions that were presented. This hybrid approach was developed and selected as the preferred alternative in response to the feedback that we received.
Preferred Concept Solution: Land Raising and Shoreline Flood Berm
The preferred solution for Toronto Island Marina is localized land raising and a shoreline flood berm.
This solution involves raising a portion of the marina yard above the 100-year flood level, in combination with road raising that is part of the Roadways study area. Additionally, an inland berm will be placed along the west facing shoreline at the northeast limits of the marina yard (cross-section C2B). This will transition into a vegetated shoreline berm along the section of shoreline that travels between the marina and ferry terminal (cross-section C2C). A walking path can be added to the top of the berm during detailed design should this be desired as part of the Toronto Island Park Master Plan process. As the shoreline wraps around Toronto Island BBQ and Beer Co at the eastern corner of the focus area, the treatment transitions into a steel sheet pile wall that is supported by a rip rap revetment to accommodate existing site conditions (cross-section C2D).
