Ferry Terminal

The Ferry Terminal is located on the northern shore of Centre Island. The Ferry Terminal shoreline is currently surrounded by an existing steel sheet pile wall; however, the wall is too low to prevent flooding during high-lake levels.

What we heard

A range of alternative concept designs were presented for this focus area, including a steel sheet pile wall, a stacked/stepped wall, or a flood berm with revetment. During the first round of engagement, the stacked/stepped wall was presented as the highest ranked concept and the feedback we received supported this recommendation.

Preferred Concept Solution: Stacked/Stepped Wall

The preferred solution for Centre Island Ferry Terminal is a stacked/stepped wall. This solution is a hybrid approach that includes two variations to align with expected public use of this area.

A stepped concrete wall will be placed on the west side of the ferry terminal. The wall will be built by installing a new steel sheet pile wall in front of the existing seawall. Concrete steps will be installed over top of the wall to create a seating area and the land behind it will be raised (cross-section F2B).

A stacked armourstone wall will be placed on the east side of the ferry terminal. This wall will support a berm that will be placed along the top of the shoreline (cross-section F2A). The treatment on this side of the ferry terminal is slightly softer to assist with the transition to the preferred solution for the Centreville focus area.
