Centreville
Centreville is located on the east side of Centre Island. Its shoreline is currently surrounded by several different types of structures, most of which are in deteriorating condition and do not provide adequate flood protection.
What we heard
A range of alternative concept designs were presented for this focus area, including a steel sheet pile wall, naturalized shoreline and flood berm, or buried steel sheet pile wall and naturalized shoreline. During the first round of engagement, the naturalized shoreline and flood berm was presented as the highest ranked concept and the feedback we received supported this recommendation. In response to feedback, this concept was slightly refined to include additional sections of shoreline around Duck Pond to better address flood impacts in this area.
Preferred Concept Solution: Naturalized Shoreline and Flood Berm
The preferred solution for Centreville is a naturalized shoreline and flood berm. This solution involves installing an impermeable berm around the perimeter of the focus area. In front of the berm, the shoreline will be naturalized with a mix of stone and vegetation to soften the shoreline and provide aquatic habitat (cross-section C2E).
There is opportunity to include a pathway along the top of the berm in strategic locations should this be desired as part of the Toronto Island Park Master Plan process. Some adjustments to the berm may be required during detailed design to accommodate spatial constraints in certain locations along the shoreline.
This solution also includes raising the grade of the pathway that leads to the Carousel Café on the island located south of Duck Pond. Additional road raising, as part of the Roadways study area, will take place along Avenue of the Island.
